Many people are surprised to learn that becoming a Christian is not something someone does by deciding to change themselves. They may make moral or intellectual decisions which may eventually lead to the place where they become a Christian but the actual change is not something they do through their own human effort.
Romans 9:16
One of the most important steps in becoming a Christian is realizing that it is a gift. The New Testament says,
"it is a gift of God... so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8-10 In this same passage the word created is used to explain how we become a Christian. "
For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works." This is obviously something which is done in the believer by God, not something the person does to themselves. The creation is a gift which is given freely so that no one will be filled with pride.
The creation, which happens in the person who experiences God's grace, is referred to again in
2 Corinthians 5:17-18. "
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation." &
Galatians 6:14-15 "
...what counts is a new creation." These verses make it clear that all of this is from God and that the emphasis is on Jesus Christ who died on the cross. He is reconciling us to Himself and in so doing is giving us a new kind of life.
Romans 6:3-5
The way to become a Christian is to receive God's free gift. This happens when someone stops trying to earn credits with God and totally trusts their life to Him. His sacrifice for sin is completely sufficient to meet, not only your need, but the need of the whole world.
1 John 2:2 You can safely place your life in His hands and allow Him to create something new in you. When you are totally surrendered, God will pour His Spirit into you. This new life is not like the life you have been living. Now the life which is dwelling in you is the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
Colossians 1:26-27;
Galatians 2:19-20 Allowing God to make this spiritual transformation in your life is how you become a Christian.
If you are at the point in your life where you would like to become a Christian, please pray this prayer. "Lord Jesus, I place myself in Your hands. I completely surrender my life to You in order that You may create in me new life. Please forgive me and give me Your gift of mercy and grace. I am ready to receive Your Spirit and from this point on, live for You. A-men!"
